A coach’s guide for creating calming “no-screen” zones at home

Between staying in touch with friends and keeping up with work or school deadlines, it can feel impossible to completely unplug. But while tech keeps us connected, it can also leave us feeling burned out, anxious, and disconnected from the people who actually matter most. 

If you’re craving a bit more peace at home, building "no-screen" zones is a game-changer. It’s not about ditching technology forever; it’s about making your environment work for you rather than against you. Read on for three ways to reclaim your space. 

1. Prioritize mealtimes 

Whether you’re living with roommates, family, partners, or solo, it’s easy to mindlessly scroll during mealtimes. But what would happen if you began to make this time about connecting with yourself and those around you? 

Try parking your devices in another room before you sit down to eat. It sounds simple, but the shift in vibe is immediate. Without the distraction of notifications, conversation and thoughts actually have room to breathe. You could put on your favorite playlist, share your “highs and lows” from the day, or brainstorm ways to improve your new favorite recipe. 

2. Turn your bedroom into a sanctuary

Transform your bedroom into a space where you can fully recharge. Research shows that the blue light from screens can impact your melatonin, making it harder to fall asleep and stay asleep. Try setting up a charging station in your living room or kitchen so that you can keep your phone out of reach before bed. 

Replace that late-night scroll with something that actually helps you wind down. Pick up a book, try some light stretching, journal your thoughts, or work on a creative project to wind down. 

3. Schedule more offline moments

It’s easy to get caught in the habit of being “always on.” Sometimes you have to be intentional about carving out time to just be somewhere, without documenting it or checking in.

Brainstorm a few things you love doing that don’t involve a screen. Maybe it’s a weekday walk, a Saturday morning coffee run, or a dedicated game night with friends. Make these your non-negotiable, screen-free blocks.

Implementing boundaries isn’t about being “anti-tech”—it’s about being intentional. By creating these pockets of calm, you’re choosing to prioritize your mental health and your relationships over the infinite feed.
